WHAT ARE THE SOCIAL JUSTICE SEMINARS?

THE SOCIAL JUSTICE SEMINARS ARE SIMPLY A SERIES OF GATHERINGS WHERE PRACTITIONERS IN THE SOCIAL WORK (OR RELATED) FIELD CAN COME TOGETHER FOR THE RECIPROCAL SHARING OF IDEAS, PASSIONS, THOUGHTS, SUPPORT AND (OF COURSE) FEELINGS.

WHY?

AS SOCIAL WORKERS/HELPERS OUR WORK BRINGS US INTO VERY COMPLEX SITUATIONS, WITH INDIVIDUALS, SYSTEMS, ORGANIZATIONS AND INSTITUTIONS. QUITE OFTEN WE BECOME VERY FOCUSED ON OUR DAY TO DAY WORK (SUPER IMPORTANT) AND OFTEN DON’T HAVE OR TAKE THE TIME TO REFLECT AND REFINE OUR PRACTICE, KEEP UP TO DATE ON NEW TRENDS, IDEAS, POLICIES, THEORIES, DEVELOPMENTS OR ENGAGE IN MENTORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES WITH OUR COLLEAGUES (EQUALLY, SUPER IMPORTANT).

THE OBJECTIVE OF THE SOCIAL JUSTICE SEMINARS IS TO FACILITATE ALL OF THE ABOVE. BY COMMITTING TO PRACTICES LIKE THE SEMINARS EACH OF US COMMITS TO A SET TIME TO GATHER AND HONOUR EACH OF OURS AND OUR OWN GIFTS. (WE ALSO CAN “HONOUR” OUR COMMITMENT TO OUR LICENSING BODY AS WE USE THE SOCIAL JUSTICE SEMINARS TOWARDS OUR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT REQUIREMENTS).

WHAT’S DIFFERENT ABOUT THIS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT?

THE SOCIAL JUSTICE SEMINARS CAME TO BE OUT OF A COMBINATION OF OVER 30 YEARS OF RESEARCH, EVERYDAY STUDYING IN THE AREAS OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, TRAINING AND ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT, THERAPEUTIC ENVIRONMENTS AND THROUGH PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, REFLECTION AND DIALOGING WITH COLLEAGUES.

CONFERENCES, TRAININGS, WORKSHOPS CAN HAVE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON OUR PRACTICE AS PRACTITIONERS – HOWEVER THE RETURN ON INVESTMENT IS USUALLY VERY LOW WITH THE CONVENTIONAL STANDARD APPROACHES TO DEVELOPMENT. IN MOST INSTANCES WE AREN’T TRANSFERRING NEW IDEAS, SKILLS, OR PRACTICES BACK INTO THE WORKPLACE OR INTEGRATING THEM INTO OUR BODY, MINDS AND SPIRITS – MAINLY DUE TO TRADITIONAL & COST EFFECTIVE FORMATS.

MORE IMPORTANTLY FOR US, AT THE PROTOTYPICAL TRAINING WE WEREN’T ABLE TO HASH OUT SOME OF THE CONFLICTING THOUGHTS WE WERE HAVING, THE EPIPHANIES, THE AHA MOMENTS, THE SHEER DISAPPOINTMENT OR DISHEARTENING WE EXPERIENCED. WE DIDN’T HAVE A TRUSTED COMMUNITY TO DO THIS WITH IN REAL TIME OR ON A REGULAR BASIS – THE PROCESSES THAT HELP US INTEGRATE INFORMATION AND LEARN, TO REFLECT ON OUR BELIEFS AND VALUES AND HOW WE WERE PRACTICING THEM.

LEARNING HAPPENS IN MANY WAYS. THROUGH EXPERIENCE, THROUGH MENTORSHIP AND PEER RELATIONSHIPS WITH COLLEAGUES AND SUPERVISORS. WE ALSO LEARN FROM FORMAL COURSE WORK, WORKSHOPS AND PRESENTATIONS, THROUGH REFLECTION, METAPHOR ETC. MUCH LEARNING ALSO COMES DO FROM THE INDIVIDUALS, FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES THAT WE SERVE AND FROM OUR OWN REFLECTIONS ON OUR PRACTICE. THE SOCIAL JUSTICE SEMINARS WILL INTEGRATE ALL OF THESE COMPONENTS IN ONE SERIES.

ADDITIONALLY, WE WILL PROVIDE A CASUAL, SAFE, COMFORTABLE ENVIRONMENT TO FURTHER FACILITATE INDIVIDUALIZED AND DEEP LEARNING COMPLETE WITH HOME COOKED HEALTHY SNACKS AND BEVERAGES TO NOURISH YOUR WHOLE HEALTH.

SO WHAT ARE THEY?

THE SEMINARS ARE A SERIES OF 1 TO 3 HOUR SESSIONS OVER THE COURSE OF APPROXIMATELY 8 WEEKS, WITH A CLOSED GROUP OF INTERESTED SOCIAL WORK/SOCIAL SERVICE/HELPING PROFESSIONALS (OR THE EQUIVALENT!) WE DON’T WANT TO BE EXCLUSIONARY!
THE GROUP WILL COME TOGETHER AND CO-CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE LEARNING, CONSTRUCTING NEW IDEAS, DECONSTRUCTING EXISTING ONES HAPPENS.

THE GROUPS ARE BASED ON INTERDEPENDENCE AND RECIPROCAL (SHARED) LEARNING WITH EACH GROUP MEMBER IS COMMITTED TO BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS, INFUSING NEW IDEAS, RETHINKING EXISTING STRUCTURES, AND REFLECTING ON
EXPERIENCES.

THE SESSIONS WILL INVITE INFORMATION SHARING, CONVERSATIONS, FEEDBACK, AND PROMOTE AND PROTECT RISK -TAKING TO FOSTER INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP DEVELOPMENT.

MAIN THEMES OF THE SEMINARS WILL CHANGE AND WILL BE VERY MUCH DEPENDENT ON PARTICIPANT GOALS, PASSIONS AND INTERESTS. AS PART OF THE REGISTRATION PROCESS WE WILL ASK FOLKS TO IDENTIFY RELEVANT AREAS OF INTEREST FOR THEM.
