Counselling “Fit”

People seek out support in the form of counselling for many reasons. At Dragonfly we seek to first and foremost build meaningful, compassionate and trusting relationships with people and to understand their unique reasons for seeking counselling supports.

Of utmost importance in this type of therapeutic relationship is what we refer to as “fit”. Fit refers to whether or not individuals, couples, families feel a connection to the counsellor they will be working with – this could include a feeling of comfort, a general sense of “getting along” , a mutual sense of respect or of liking or a connection across values. Sometimes “not a fit” can result from something as simple as not liking the sound of someone’s voice.

Fit can also refer to the methods of the counsellor. Is the “how” they go about supporting individuals acceptable or comfortable to the individuals seeking support. Many different counsellors use different methods or techniques in supporting folks and these methods need to be acceptable to individuals seeking support.

Finding fit can be a bit of a trial and error process but it is important. Many counsellors – like at Dragonfly CCR offer free consultations and brief meet and greets – this way you can get a sense of fit early on.

We encourage you to give us a call at 204 223 2202 to speak to Raegan and find out more about our services and our “fit” for you.

The Social Justice Seminars: Critical Community of Practice

THE SOCIAL JUSTICE SEMINARS: CRITICAL COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE
PRESENTED BY: DRAGONFLY CONSULTATION, COUNSELLING & RESEARCH

WHAT ARE THE SOCIAL JUSTICE SEMINARS?

THE SOCIAL JUSTICE SEMINARS ARE SIMPLY A SERIES OF GATHERINGS WHERE PRACTITIONERS IN THE SOCIAL WORK (OR RELATED) FIELD CAN COME TOGETHER FOR THE RECIPROCAL SHARING OF IDEAS, PASSIONS, THOUGHTS, SUPPORT AND (OF COURSE) FEELINGS.

WHY?

AS SOCIAL WORKERS/HELPERS OUR WORK BRINGS US INTO VERY COMPLEX SITUATIONS, WITH INDIVIDUALS, SYSTEMS, ORGANIZATIONS AND INSTITUTIONS. QUITE OFTEN WE BECOME VERY FOCUSED ON OUR DAY TO DAY WORK (SUPER IMPORTANT) AND OFTEN DON’T HAVE OR TAKE THE TIME TO REFLECT AND REFINE OUR PRACTICE, KEEP UP TO DATE ON NEW TRENDS, IDEAS, POLICIES, THEORIES, DEVELOPMENTS OR ENGAGE IN MENTORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES WITH OUR COLLEAGUES (EQUALLY, SUPER IMPORTANT).

THE OBJECTIVE OF THE SOCIAL JUSTICE SEMINARS IS TO FACILITATE ALL OF THE ABOVE. BY COMMITTING TO PRACTICES LIKE THE SEMINARS EACH OF US COMMITS TO A SET TIME TO GATHER AND HONOUR EACH OF OURS AND OUR OWN GIFTS. (WE ALSO CAN “HONOUR” OUR COMMITMENT TO OUR LICENSING BODY AS WE USE THE SOCIAL JUSTICE SEMINARS TOWARDS OUR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT REQUIREMENTS).

WHAT’S DIFFERENT ABOUT THIS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT?

THE SOCIAL JUSTICE SEMINARS CAME TO BE OUT OF A COMBINATION OF OVER 30 YEARS OF RESEARCH, EVERYDAY STUDYING IN THE AREAS OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, TRAINING AND ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT, THERAPEUTIC ENVIRONMENTS AND THROUGH PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, REFLECTION AND DIALOGING WITH COLLEAGUES.

CONFERENCES, TRAININGS, WORKSHOPS CAN HAVE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON OUR PRACTICE AS PRACTITIONERS – HOWEVER THE RETURN ON INVESTMENT IS USUALLY VERY LOW WITH THE CONVENTIONAL STANDARD APPROACHES TO DEVELOPMENT. IN MOST INSTANCES WE AREN’T TRANSFERRING NEW IDEAS, SKILLS, OR PRACTICES BACK INTO THE WORKPLACE OR INTEGRATING THEM INTO OUR BODY, MINDS AND SPIRITS – MAINLY DUE TO TRADITIONAL & COST EFFECTIVE FORMATS.

MORE IMPORTANTLY FOR US, AT THE PROTOTYPICAL TRAINING WE WEREN’T ABLE TO HASH OUT SOME OF THE CONFLICTING THOUGHTS WE WERE HAVING, THE EPIPHANIES, THE AHA MOMENTS, THE SHEER DISAPPOINTMENT OR DISHEARTENING WE EXPERIENCED. WE DIDN’T HAVE A TRUSTED COMMUNITY TO DO THIS WITH IN REAL TIME OR ON A REGULAR BASIS – THE PROCESSES THAT HELP US INTEGRATE INFORMATION AND LEARN, TO REFLECT ON OUR BELIEFS AND VALUES AND HOW WE WERE PRACTICING THEM.

LEARNING HAPPENS IN MANY WAYS. THROUGH EXPERIENCE, THROUGH MENTORSHIP AND PEER RELATIONSHIPS WITH COLLEAGUES AND SUPERVISORS. WE ALSO LEARN FROM FORMAL COURSE WORK, WORKSHOPS AND PRESENTATIONS, THROUGH REFLECTION, METAPHOR ETC. MUCH LEARNING ALSO COMES DO FROM THE INDIVIDUALS, FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES THAT WE SERVE AND FROM OUR OWN REFLECTIONS ON OUR PRACTICE. THE SOCIAL JUSTICE SEMINARS WILL INTEGRATE ALL OF THESE COMPONENTS IN ONE SERIES.

ADDITIONALLY, WE WILL PROVIDE A CASUAL, SAFE, COMFORTABLE ENVIRONMENT TO FURTHER FACILITATE INDIVIDUALIZED AND DEEP LEARNING COMPLETE WITH HOME COOKED HEALTHY SNACKS AND BEVERAGES TO NOURISH YOUR WHOLE HEALTH.

SO WHAT ARE THEY?

THE SEMINARS ARE A SERIES OF 1 TO 3 HOUR SESSIONS OVER THE COURSE OF APPROXIMATELY 8 WEEKS, WITH A CLOSED GROUP OF INTERESTED SOCIAL WORK/SOCIAL SERVICE/HELPING PROFESSIONALS (OR THE EQUIVALENT!) WE DON’T WANT TO BE EXCLUSIONARY!
THE GROUP WILL COME TOGETHER AND CO-CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE LEARNING, CONSTRUCTING NEW IDEAS, DECONSTRUCTING EXISTING ONES HAPPENS.

THE GROUPS ARE BASED ON INTERDEPENDENCE AND RECIPROCAL (SHARED) LEARNING WITH EACH GROUP MEMBER IS COMMITTED TO BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS, INFUSING NEW IDEAS, RETHINKING EXISTING STRUCTURES, AND REFLECTING ON
EXPERIENCES.

THE SESSIONS WILL INVITE INFORMATION SHARING, CONVERSATIONS, FEEDBACK, AND PROMOTE AND PROTECT RISK -TAKING TO FOSTER INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP DEVELOPMENT.

MAIN THEMES OF THE SEMINARS WILL CHANGE AND WILL BE VERY MUCH DEPENDENT ON PARTICIPANT GOALS, PASSIONS AND INTERESTS. AS PART OF THE REGISTRATION PROCESS WE WILL ASK FOLKS TO IDENTIFY RELEVANT AREAS OF INTEREST FOR THEM.

DRAGONFLY CONSULTATION, COUNSELLING & RESEARCH CONSULTANTS (TONI & RAEGAN) WILL HOST AND FACILITATE THE SEMINARS, INCLUDING PROVIDING BACKGROUND INFORMATION, PROVOCATIVE QUESTIONS & RESOURCES NECESSARY FOR GREAT DIALOGUE – AS WELL AS LOCAL SNACKS AND DRINKS.

DRAGONFLY CCR IS AN ORGANIZATION THAT IS COMMITTED TO CRITICAL, ANTI-OPPRESSIVE AND SOCIALLY JUST PRACTICES AND SO ALL THEMES OF SEMINARS WILL FIT WITHIN THOSE DESCRIPTORS.

Doing PD Differently:Creating Knowledge Together With Group Learning Forums

Dragonfly LogoDRAGONFLY Consultation, Counselling & Research

Our priority at Dragonfly is to practice in ways that are in line with our beliefs and values. This means regularly examining what we are doing as individuals, professionals, groups. organizations and through structures, discourse, systems within society. This process includes reflection, reflexivity, critical thinking and casting a “critical” gaze (challenging the taken for granted assumptions and status quo). Stay tuned for a blog on this topic in the near future.

Professional and Personal Development is one area we have committed to focus on in our work. There is enormous potential in the field of development – personal and professional- to facilitate knowledge transfer and mobilization, deep learning and understanding and building capacity. Yet mainstream professional development falls very short in creating the context for the above to happen. I don’t want to inundate you with research or commentary on research (well not in this piece!). Instead I will present a few key points on why Professional Development these days doesn’t cut it for us at Dragonfly and reasons why we prefer to facilitate Group Learning Forums.

Traditional Professional Development Formats:
◾Knowledge and expertise is seen as residing in single people- often referred to as the expert.
◾There is a knower and knowledge producer – the expert AND consumers of the knower’s knowledge –the workshop participants.
◾Content is pre-determined, delivered via pre-determined timeline with pre-determined activities and processes. The emphasis of these formats is transmitting knowledge, the loudest and most prominent voice is the “facilitator” or the “speaker” – the expert.
◾This type of self-help or professional development event is often delivered in one-shot formats (one or two days). Minimal pre or post work is done. What is done post-workshop tends to be information gathering designed to provide feedback or promotional materials for the facilitator and not the participants.
◾Participants are for the most part passive receivers of information, beyond individual or group activities inserted to keep attention and facilitate further listening.
◾Participants leave workshops with some handouts and tip sheets and their personal notes.
◾Professional Development one-shot formats create reliance on “professionals”, “entrepreneurs” & “experts” to continue to teach and share information.
◾Reinforce and reproduce lecture and didactic methods of teaching and learning.
◾One-size fits all approach – doesn’t recognize the unique strengths and needs of individuals as learners.

Group Learning Forums

The emphasis is on process and dialogue
◾People constructing knowledge through dialogue and through relationships
◾Assumes and firmly believes that all people have knowledge to share (we are all teachers) all people can learn from others (we are all learners).
◾Through discussion, dialogue, personal critical reflection, and metacognition (thinking about how you think) activities and processes are developed to assist in generating, translating, sharing and integrating information and knowledge.
◾Bringing together individuals from different disciplines, different social locations, different “professions” provides opportunities for group members to integrate information in new and sustained ways.
◾Homogenous groups build capacity by bringing together group members from the same profession within the same setting. This way colleagues can have ample opportunity to collaborate, build in on- the-job structures and processes for ongoing coaching, support and mentorship in sustaining learning.
◾Learning is lead by the group, group members are active participants (beyond flipcharting and role-playing!) and will take on more or less active roles depending on chosen topics. Group Members chose to interact with the content in ways that are most meaningful for them as they pursue analysis, synthesis and integration.
◾Meanings, truths, facts, information are negotiated by individual members and the group to explore deeper meanings.
◾Participants may experience more questions when they leave a forum but with opportunity to explore it further, apply information or tools they have learned and process at the next forum.
◾Simultaneous outcome is to build capacity within the individuals and the group so the process of learning forums can be utilized to facilitate and sustain future learning – without the facilitator.
◾Participants learn to participate in and run learning forums as they explore a specific topic – they don’t have to rely on an outside expert. Vital financial resources used to pay “experts” to inform can be kept within the organization or system.
◾Create a network of professional (and potentially personal) supports for group members.
◾Provides intimate setting (group size is limited) where group members are seen as unique individuals.
◾Value and demonstrate through process, that participants’ experience, knowledge, ideas, creativity and skills are vital and key sources of information and integral to individual and collective personal and professional development.
◾Pre-forum work with group members involves identification, creation and/or augmentation of structures, systems, processes and resources within their environments that will facilitate the sustainable implementation of key learning into their professional/personal practices.

Beyond the Workshop: Organizational Learning & Development Systems

.Dragonfly LogoDRAGONFLY Consultation, Counselling & Research

Professional & Organizational Learning & Development Systems

Dragonfly is committed to embedding the principles of social justice, equity and anti-oppressive practice in all aspects of our work including: decisions about what projects to take on, how these projects are developed and how they are delivered.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT & TRAINING is currently an area we have committed to and targeted for change.

Here’s why:

  • Professional Development and training is a hundred billion dollar a year industry, yet in its current and most popular form, is largely ineffective.
  • When staff attend traditional professional development workshops, conferences or seminars on average only 10% of what is learned at the session(s) is transferred back to the job or the organization.
  • If organizations are spending billions of dollars (often from public funding) on training, they absolutely should be getting better results.
  • Alternative forms of professional development that capitalize on strengths within the organization have been shown to be effective in changing practices and impacting on outcomes for recipients of services.

So What?

We believe more can, and should, be done to:

Support employees in their learning and development as they work in supporting others.

AND

Amplify the support available and provided to employees to enhance opportunities for them to learn, teach, develop and grow in their work and their lives.

AND

Enhance organizational awareness, ability and “return on investment” in this area.

So What is Different?

We are not interested in quick fixes or simply replicating the current “drive-by PD” formats.

We are interested in assisting programs/organizations in creating sustainable processes that can be applied to all of their professional development & learning efforts.

Professional & Organizational Learning & Development Systems is a comprehensive approach to individual and organizational learning that establishes processes within the organization or program at three major points:

1) Pre-Training (preparatory processes)

2) At-Training (acquisition & assimilation processes)

3) Post-Training (application, integration, sustaining & growth processes)

Each system is tailored to the strengths and unique needs of the program or organization (every sector is different) and is informed by current research and practice wisdom from the community and from within the organization.

By taking a more comprehensive approach DRAGONFLY hopes to accomplish the following:

  • Support organizations to develop and embed structures and processes that will maximize the transfer of learning from every professional development & learning activity back to the job in sustained and impactful ways.
  • Broaden the current, narrow, focus of what constitutes professional development & learning to emphasize the vast knowledge within an organization and ways to capitalize on existing internal resources (your employees, your service recipients).
  • Influence other professional development & training consultants/companies to market their products and stated outcomes more responsibly, accurately and ethically.
  • Build the internal capacity of individuals and organizations to experience continuous learning and growth and minimize reliance on external development and learning products and services.
